The mining and resources sector in the Northern Territory is crucial to sustaining essential services such as education and healthcare.

Minerals are a significant part of this industry, reaching $4.38 billion for the 22-23 financial year.

To boost the minerals sector, the Northern Territory Government is implementing the recommendations of an independent Minerals Development Taskforce, who recommended actions to catalyse private investment and increase the competitiveness of the Territory.

This commitment to grow the sector in a sustainable way, will attract more investments, create jobs, and accelerate projects, helping the economy grow to $40 billion by 2030.

The NT government is also investing $7.3 million over three years to modernise the Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority’s business systems, streamlining the process of releasing land for mineral leases. This will benefit custodians of sacred sites as well as mining and resource companies. The ongoing annual funding of $9.5 million for the Resourcing the Territory exploration program is critical to attracting exploration in underdeveloped areas.

Expanding the mining and resources industry in the Northern Territory will benefit the economy by creating jobs and business opportunities for all Territorians. Similarly, the onshore gas industry has the potential to provide long-term benefits to Territorians, delivering industry growth, job opportunities, training, and improving the standard of living.

The successful production of minerals and onshore gas will positively impact communities and social infrastructure in the Top End, Barkly, Central Australia, East Arnhem, and Big River regions, leading to sustained population growth and increased revenue streams for the benefit of all Territorians.

It would provide more funding for education and training, sporting and community facilities, and health services and facilities. It can also contribute to better public infrastructure, such as roads, rail, telecommunications, air services, and improved tourism industry infrastructure.
