Renewable Resources

The Northern Territory Government has a target of 50% renewable energy by 2030.

The NT Government is implementing a number of plans, strategies and programs that are supporting the achievement of a Territory Renewable Energy future of secure, reliable, sustainable and affordable energy supply.

This includes supporting investment in small-scale solar and batteries for homes and businesses, large-scale renewable energy generation and storage, and hydrogen production, use and export.

The transition to renewable energy and a low emissions economy presents opportunities for the Territory, drawing on its strengths in the mining and resources sector, to assist other communities in Australia and internationally to decarbonise through renewable energy exports.

The Territory boasts large areas with very-high levels of solar irradiation, making it a prime location for solar energy development; and its potential for wind energy development is increasingly being recognised.

The NT Government has a vision to be a leader in the world transition to renewable hydrogen. The Renewable Hydrogen Master Plan outlines the NT Government’s framework to develop a renewable hydrogen industry.

Large-scale renewable hydrogen project proposals include the Tiwi H2 Project and the Darwin H2 Hub development.
